The Missing Piece
The layer under mindset work
Is it fair to say we are more educated about our mental and emotional health than at any point in history? There are so many resources!
Books, podcasts, mini training, courses, coaching, therapy. Probably more tools than most of us know what to do with. And yet so many people seem to be “stuck” in patterns that are hard to shift.
I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
So many people are self aware, can point out their patterns, even know where the patterns are coming from. But change still doesn’t follow.
Understanding something and having access to it are not the same thing. Your nervous system can hear a reframe, agree with it, even repeat it back, without ever having the resources available to actually integrate it.
When your system is busy keeping you safe, there isn’t much left over for growth. So the insights just sit there, technically known but functionally unused.
This is why “I know better, I just can’t seem to do it” isn’t a discipline problem. It’s usually a state problem.
I call this gap the missing piece. It’s the layer underneath all the mindset work, the piece that decides whether any of it actually lands.
I go deeper into all of this in this week’s Building Resilience episode, including what it actually looks like when someone’s system tips into protection without anything dramatic happening first.

PS. If you are a coach, therapist, helping professional, leader, or anyone curious about what drives all human behaviour, I'd love to have you join me live. I'm hosting a free four day event called the Nervous System Resilience Experience, July 13 to 16 (2pmEST) , with a Q&A bonus session on July 20 (and a VIP on July 17)
